Bushman: Nyah Man Chant - 1997

This is a fine example of contemporary roots reggae, twenty years and more on from the original roots material.

Its instrumentation has digital aspects, but there is also some one-drop backing, together with horns, and Bushman - like his afore-mentioned influencer Garnett Silk - sings as opposes to raps.

There is no Shaggy-style rap-influenced incoherence here. The lyrics are Rasta-inspired in true seventies style. More top quality rumbling basslines abound and some retro-style flying cymbals too. It is only the digital percussion that makes you realise this is a nineties album and not a seventies one.

Standouts are Nyah Man Chant, the enjoyable Cannabis, the righteous Man A Lion and the superb, evocative Remember The Days, with its distinctly Catch A Fire wah-wah guitar sound and Buju Banton-esque vocal.
